You'll need:

Around 70m of orange 5mm cord (I use Bobbiny)

Around 20m of black 5mm cord

8mm hook

I am using UK terms:

DC - Double Crochet
TR - Treble Crochet
SL ST - Slip Stitch
FLO - Front Loop Only
BLO - Back Loop Only
Crab Stitch - DC in reverse

In this pattern, the technique I have used to change colour is to finish the stitch with the new colour. So, when doing a DC, put the hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop, and then yarn over with the NEW colour and pull that through to finish the stitch.

The pattern:

Make a slip knot with the orange cord.

Round 1: CH4 and make 11 TRs into the 4th CH from the hook, SL ST into the 1st actual ST (not the inital CH). CH3 and turn. (12 STS)

Round 2: Make a TR into the same space, make 2TR into every other ST round, SL ST into the 1st actual ST (not the inital CH). CH3 and turn. (24 STS)

Round 3: Make a TR into the same space, *TR into the next ST, 2TR into the next ST round*, repeat round from * to *, SL ST into the 1st actual ST (not the inital CH). CH1  (36 STS)

Round 4: DC into BLO of same ST, DC into BLO of all STS round, SL ST into 1st ST, CH1. (36 STS)

In the next few rounds we will be changing colour frequently, to make life easier you can crochet over both cords during the colour change sections, meaning less ends to sew in.

Round 5: DC into same space, DC into next 3 STS and change to black cord, DC in next 11 STS and change back to orange cord, DC round into remaining STS, SL ST into 1st ST, CH1. (36 STS)

Round 6: DC into same space, DC into next 4 STS and change to black cord, *DC into next ST and change to orange cord, DC into next 3 STS and change to black cord*, repeat from * to *, DC into the next ST and change to orange cord, DC round into remaining STS, SL ST into 1st ST, CH1. (36 STS)

Round 7: DC into the same space, DC round into all remaining STS, SL ST into 1st ST, CH1. (36 STS)

Round 8: DC into same space, DC into next 5 STS and change to black cord, *DC into next 3 STS and change to orange cord*, DC into next 2 STS and change to black cord, Repeat from * to*, DC round into remaining STS, SL ST into 1st ST, CH1. (36 STS)

Round 9: DC into same space, DC into the next 6 STS and change to black cord, *DC in the next ST and change to orange cord*, DC in the next 4 STS and change to black cord, repeat from * to *, DC into remaining STS round, SL ST into 1st ST, CH1. (36 STS)

Round 10: DC into same space, DC into remaining STS round, SL ST into 1st ST and change to black cord (you could continue with orange if you wish), CH1. (36 STS)

Round 11: DC into the same space, DC into remaining STS round, SL ST into 1st ST, CH1. (36 STS)

Round 12: Crab stitch round into the FLO of every stitch. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
